Chess Club

"Playing chess prepares you for life! It teaches you how to make plans and execute them, how to track your work and make adjustments when things do not go as planned."

The St. Joseph’s Knights Chess Club begins October in the Matthew room! It is open to all students in grades 1-8. Coach Joe Sommers is in his 4th year as chess coach for St. Joseph’s. This year we will have practice sessions every Wednesday school is in session from October through March 2010. The time will be 2:30—3:30, slightly longer than in the past to allow players more time to finish their games. The two priorities for this year are CHESS NOTATION, to allow players to record and learn from their games, and increased participation at tournaments, which give monthly opportunities to spend a Saturday testing and honing your skills against students from other schools.

Last year we took team trophies in the K-3 division for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place, as well as many individual honors. We also had 30 regular players, and totaled over 700 student hours of playing chess.
